I've been thinking a lot about hope lately. Before my diagnosis of Bipolar, I thought of hope as an emotion that people experienced erroneously or sometimes, even tragically. But after my diagnosis — after losing my marriage, identity, health, friends, family, and life as I knew it — I began to understand that hope is so much more.
Hope is everything. without hope, I wouldn't be alive. hope is what helps us persist even in the face of fear and doubt when things are dark and all seems lost. hope allows us to set goals each day, to wake up and face ourselves in the mirror despite all the sorrows that life can bring. hope brings life and possibility, and with that love and joy.
I don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains.
— Anne Frank
Everything that is done in this world is done by hope.
— Martin Luther
Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.
I dwell in possibility.
— Emily Dickinson
Hope keeps you alive.
— Lauren Olive
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.
— Woodrow Wilson
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
— Francis of Assisi
Hope has a cost. Hope is not comfortable or easy. Hope requires personal risk. It is not about the right attitude. Hope is not about peace of mind. Hope is action. Hope is doing something. The more futile, the more useless, the more irrelevant and incomprehensible an act of rebellion is, the vaster and more potent hope becomes.
— Chris Hedges
We need never be hopeless because we can never be irreperably broken.
— John Green
Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all the evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it and to work for it and to fight for it.
— Barack Obama
Life is meaningless only if we allow it to be. Each of us has the power to give life meaning, to make our time and our bodies and our words into instruments of love and hope.
— Tom Head
